Statistics & Applied Discrete Math
(All Courses Above are Included in GPA)
Statistics L3
MA333 - 1.0 Credit - Year Long - Grades 11-12
Prerequisite:
- Successful completion of Algebra II; OR
- Concurrent enrollment in Algebra II AND recommendation of current Math teacher
The topics for this course will be divided into three main themes: exploratory analysis of data, planning a study, and probability. Statistics is the science of collecting and analyzing data for making meaningful inferences. Probability is the study of predicting the outcome of events based on known or measurable quantities as well as on elements of chance. Students will be introduced to the basic concepts and procedures of both topics and how these are used to solve problems in probability and statistics as they relate to games of chance, social sciences, physical sciences, etc.
Statistics L4
MA342 - 1.0 Credit - Year Long - Grades 11-12
Prerequisite:
- Successful completion of current L5 Math course; OR
- Recommendation of current Math teacher AND either: C- or better in current L4 Math course, OR B- or better in Introduction to Precalculus L3
This course covers the same topics as those studied in the Level 3 class, but in greater depth. Additional tests and/or projects may be assigned.
AP Statistics
MA250 - 1.0 Credit - Year Long - Grades 10-12
Prerequisite:
All students must have the recommendation of their current Math teacher AND one of the following:
All students must have the recommendation of their current Math teacher AND one of the following:
- B+ or better in current L5 Math class AND concurrent enrollment in Algebra II L4 or L5; OR
- A or better in current L4 Math class AND concurrent enrollment in Algebra II L4 or L5; OR
- Successful completion of Algebra II L5 AND C+ or better in current L5 Math class; OR
- Successful completion of Algebra II L4 or L5 AND B or better in current L4 Math class
The topics for this course will be divided into four main themes: exploratory analysis of data, planning a study, probability, and statistical inference. The syllabus is consistent with the AP Statistics course recommended by the College Board. The material covered in the course will prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination in Statistics. All students are expected to take the exam. Students are required to purchase a TI-84 plus graphing calculator.
Note: AP Statistics is an elective class; it should NOT replace Algebra II or Precalculus in a “non-senior” student’s schedule.

Applied Discrete Mathematics Concepts L3
MA430 - 1.0 Credit - Year Long - Grades 11-12
Prerequisite:
- Successful completion of Algebra II L3, L4, or L5
This course offers students the opportunity to study the application of mathematical concepts to real world issues and problems (ex: urban development or political decision making). The course will also investigate how mathematics is utilized in the world around us (ex: barcodes and credit card numbers). Students will gain a solid understanding of fundamental mathematical ideas by developing mathematical models and applying technology while using these models for decision making.
